An annulment of the marriage was granted by the court because the marriage was illegal.

Usage Annulment and divorce are never synonymous with reference to marriage. An annulment is the declaration that a marriage never really existed, or was void from the beginning, that the parties were therefore never mutually married. A divorce is the legal dissolution of a previously valid marriage.
